Due to its high urban population, tree surgery in Exeter is a necessity for many households. Tree surgeons face small gardens, numerous obstacles to safely avoid and large numbers of electrical and BT cables that must be navigated. That’s where I come in to prune, fell and maintain trees in Exeter and the surrounding areas.
I offer the following tree care services in Exeter:
Pruning is critical to keeping trees looking their best and shaping them for the space they occupy. A small, carefully maintained tree in a small garden could last for decades, but if it’s allowed to get too big, eventually, the only option that remains is felling. I prune and trim a huge range of trees, whether they’re fruit trees, willow, London plane or another variety.
Laurel, yew, leylandii and thuja (western red cedar) are the most common hedge types I deal with, but I can also reduce or remove hazel, beech and hawthorn hedges. In most cases, the hedge has become unmanageable for the homeowner, and I’m called in to bring it down safely. I can also trim and neaten hedges on a monthly, six-monthly or yearly basis. Once I’m done, the remains can be shredded by my chipper and either become mulch in your garden or be taken away.
When a tree becomes too big, a crown reduction might be an option. This is where I remove the edges of a tree to reduce its overall size and potentially reshape the tree. In some cases, I can pollard the tree, where I reduce it to a few short stumps for it to regrow much smaller shoots. Willow, plane and hazel respond well to this treatment, in particular. Alternatively, I can thin the tree by removing a few bigger branches to let more light in.
If you have a lot of debris from a recent tree trim that you need removing, call me for a shredding quote. My shredder can process up to 6 cubic metres of garden waste an hour, and it’s well-suited to green waste such as leylandii and leafy shrubs.
Often I am called in to completely remove a tree. This might be because it has ash dieback or because it has completely outgrown the space it was planted in. Recent tree removals have included ash, willow and eucalyptus within striking distance of houses. In some cases, it’s involved simply felling the tree and then processing it, while in others, my clients need complex removals using ropes and pulleys to bring down parts safely, especially over buildings, sheds and sensitive areas such as graves.
I have a variety of qualifications from City & Guilds, including tree climbing, felling and chipping. Any arborist you hire should have these basic qualifications in order to be insured. In addition, I carry £5 million of public liability insurance specifically for tree surgeons. Should the worst ever happen, you’re covered.
Any reputable tree surgeon should have similar requirements. Always ask for proof of insurance in particular, and make sure that they are covered for work at least up to 20 metres, if not higher.
I cover all areas in and around Exeter, including Pinhoe, Alphington, Wonford, and Heavitree, among others. I also provide free quotes for the surrounding villages, such as Stoke Canon, Newton St Cyres, Broadclyst and Clyst Honiton. Having grown up in Mid-Devon and gone to school in Exeter, I know the area well.
The cost of tree surgery in Exeter heavily depends on the nature of the work undertaken. A simple fell and go of a conifer could be as little as a couple of hundred, whereas a large tree over a building that needs complete removal and chipping could be several thousand pounds as ropework is much slower (but much safer). Expect to pay around £350-£500 per person, per day for the job if they are fully trained and insured. While a chipper or shredder is usually standard, other equipment may be extra, such as a cherry picker or a crane.
Part of the reason why tree surgery is expensive is because it requires a lot of additional equipment. A good climbing kit alone starts at a couple of thousand pounds, and a basic rope kit for bringing down branches could be around £4,000 and needs replacing regularly. Add to that fuel, the chainsaws and a variety of kit for each job, and your average tree surgeon could be bringing tens of thousands of pounds worth of kit. Then you have the van and the time, along with the insurance. Plus the potential for downtime if the tree surgeon is injured.
All this adds up very quickly, and for a business to be viable, it needs to be accounted for. That’s why tree surgery in Exeter can be pricey.
